Inline Skate More Often!
By now, I cannot think of a single person I have met who has never tried inline skating. Yet, aside from skate park regulars, most people hardly ever do it anymore. It is one of those "forgotten" all-around conditioners that is very widely and freely available!
The important thing to do is to find a good skating route. Seriously, there have been times when I set out on my 'blades stoked about the ride, only to find that my poorly chosen route included a 1-mile stretch of asphalt that was mostly loose gravel, and a 1/2-mile stretch that was pure dirt. It was not fun, and was a bit embarrasing! Every city now has an inline skating club. Just check it out on your city's website. These people tend to meet once or twice a week and know all of the traffic-friendly, smooth-paved routes. Spending some time with these guys will maximize your inline skating experience later when you set out on your own or with friends.
At the very least, do not neglect your helmet. It's nice to have elbow, wrist, and knee guards because you may occasionally crash onto these body parts, but if you land on your head and crack your skull open, that damage is often the irreversible kind. The need for a helmet while inline skating is much more serious than even
mountain biking
and
snowboarding,
because inline skaters are always on concrete or asphalt pavement. It's very easy to lose your balance in just one second, and land solidly on your head. DON'T risk it without a helmet.
