Kayaking is an Excellent, Enjoyable Water Activity
Kayaking is an excellent, versatile outdoors activity. There are one- and two-person kayaks, river kayaks, and sea kayaks. I remember the very first time I went kayaking, out in the endless crossways of streams and lakes in Michigan. I was hooked! You can travel long distances in your kayak, and bring along plenty of food and supplies without creating any noticeable burden.
For beginners, just rent a kayak with a friend, or join a beginners’ kayaking expedition class. The experienced guide will give you a lot of valuable tips. Kayaking is an endurance activity that really works your arms, so if you are weak up there, don’t plan long trips your first few times out. Start on calm lakes and streams, then work your way up to faster-moving rivers and choppier oceans.
To me, kayaking is preferable to canoeing or row boating for several reasons: kayaks are lightest and easiest to control, being made of fiberglass rather than wood; the paddle design allows you greatest control over your speed and range of turning motion; and kayaks are the hardiest, able to withstand bumping, scraping, and overturning. Give kayaking a shot!
