A Common Sense Approach to Eating is Eating Naturally.

Let’s employ some common sense here, folks. It’s been said often before, but it bears repeating: YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. Think about this. Every day your body repairs cuts and bruises, and fights all sorts of infections. Every day your body absorbs the nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes you present to it (often far too small an amount) and utilizes it to keep your body's units, its organs and mind functioning.
This is just the natural process of life. But what people often don’t think much about, is that EVERYTHING that is used to repair those cuts and keep the body functioning (the material) comes from the food that you eat, and EVERYTHING that DOES the repairing and keeps your body functioning (the tools), that is, your organ systems (circulatory system, nervous system, digestive system, etc.), ALSO depends on the food that you feed it in order to function properly.
Your body requires vitamins, enzymes, minerals, oils, and more to function optimally. Deprive yourself of any vitamins and enzymes for an extended time, and I guarantee you will see something in your body start to malfunction. People, you can't exercise like crazy while devouring junk and fast food five times a week, then pat yourself on the back for being “healthy” because you broke a sweat every now and then! At the very least, eat a lot of natural foods to keep your body filled with these important building blocks of life - nutrients, minerals, vitamins, fiber, enzymes, etc.
The most basic recommendation I make is to eat a lot of fruit in the morning, then alternate between animal protein and vegetables (RAW as often as possible) throughout the day. Eat small quantities and don't mix your carbs and protein, for clean digestion. The Amazing Smoothies Site has a great ebook full of information and recipes on creating delicious fruit smoothies. An excellent way to get your breakfast on-the-go, or as a refresher after a hard workout.
Make every effort to cut out SUGAR and STARCH from your life. Nature has provided every wonderful food we need, period. If we would stop yielding to flashy colored packages and wrappings of junk foods and fast foods, we would quickly find how far away from "healthy" and "optimal functioning" we have deviated! A little taco bell, arbys, or pizza hut every once in a while will not destroy your health. It's what you eat EVERY DAY, meal after meal, that counts. Every single small choice you make about what you put into your mouth adds up to your overall health.
This is simply a common-sense approach to eating. Study all of the diets you want, and let the advanced-degree nutritionists chirp and peep and crow all they want about the latest diet craze. Bottom-line common sense tells us all we need to know: A variety of fruit, a variety of veggies, and a variety of animal protein as your BASIC eating plan, while minimizing STARCH and SUGAR as much as possible (or even better, just eliminating them entirely), simply put, eating NATURALLY, will leave you fantastically healthy.
Junk food is COMPLETELY DEVOID of nutrition. I don’t think it should even be called food! A greasy triple cheeseburger with fries is not only worthless but devastating to your health. Think about the implications of eating worthless food day after day. So bottom line, go ahead and supplement your food with *Vitamins, but unless your basic eating regime is natural foods, then you are not healthy, even if you faithfully take your vitamins!
* A comment on vitamin supplements. We must take a common-sense approach to this topic. We don’t need a nutritionist toting a PhD to tell us that eating at fast food restaurants six days a week, with lots of cookies, ice cream, candy, chips, and soda as snacks in between is BAD. If you eat this way and pop a vitamin pill every day, it doesn’t excuse the junk-fest, does it? Of course not. Vitamin supplementation makes sense when the diet has been adjusted to be as healthy as possible!
---> A comment on taste theory. That's right, your taste buds. It has been said that taste has a nobler purpose than just complete hedonism, in which case, there would be no greater use for the taste buds than to overload them with sweet sugary candy and salty starchy fries (which many do).
What is this purpose for which it has been proposed our sense of taste is really to be used? Hard scientific evidence on this doesn't exist yet, but the theory is that our bodies are so wonderfully made, that if we didn't abuse it with sugar, but ate only naturally, our bodies would tell us, through our taste buds, what they need.
Let me put it this way; if you have a craving for meat, your body is telling you it needs protein. When it needs Vitamin C, it might manifest as a craving for oranges, for example. When it needs calcium, you might think about cheese. Again, there's no scientific body of knowledge "proving" this, but it makes sense to me on an instinctual level.
Look at pregnant women, who have the strongest cravings I've ever seen (aside from carbohydrate addicts). They crave the oddest things, like pickles and ice cream, but the truth is their bodies lose a lot of calcium to the baby, and vinegar has a cleansing and ph-balancing effect on the body, so these cravings make absolute sense.
Judge for yourself. If you cut sugar and starch out of your diet, you would find it at least somewhat true, because eating too much sugar and starch day in and day out desensitizes our taste buds. If you still think it cannot be true, look at it from a survival standpoint. Every sensory organ we have can be used for pleasure (ears=music, body=touching, nose=aromas, eyes=art, tongue=flavors), but that is only a secondary purpose, not its primary purpose (this is only an opinion but a strong one). The primary purpose of our sensory abilities is survival (ears=predator lurking, body=reacts to extreme heat or cold, nose=tells if fire is nearby, eyes=see danger, tongue=need certain types of food).
This is true for all creatures on earth. Just because "civilized" man lives in cities instead of the wilderness, does not change the primary purpose of our sensory organs. Think about it and stop overloading your taste buds with sugar and starch!
